Pokémon’s newest game is on the horizon (get it?), and we have finally seen the first glimpse of gameplay. Will it be any good? The return of Mega Evolution, Lumious City, and the fantastic lore of the Kalos Region definitely give the game a promising start. Everything being based in a single city definitely feels like an unnecessary set of hand cuffs to put on the game, but Gamefreak seems to be up to the challenge.
Generally speaking, Pokémon is about exploration and roaming an entire region (country) in order to complete the Pokédex. In this case, it would appear they are going to be going for more of the style of the Arkham series or Spider-Man series of video games. There are designated “Wild Areas” within the city and it would appear events, raids, and others could be involved as well. This feels like it will be a fun and engaging game; however, the biggest challenge will be capturing the attention of long time Pokémon fans who are used to the standard formula.
Verdict:
Legends Z-A is Gamefreak telling us they are willing to try new things in order to attempt to grow with the video game industry. The determining factor will be whether or not Pokémon fans want change or do they want to play the standard formula over and over again. My guess would be the latter, however for me personally I am excited for the change and I cannot wait for Mega’s to make their long awaited return!
